About Lynn Maguire
Artist, sailor, and co-director of Snug Harbor Studio
A Life in Motion
Lynn grew up in a mix of places and cultures. Born in Monmouth, Oregon, she was still young when her family worked with Quakers on the Passamaquoddy Reservation in Maine—helping residents paint their homes. That experience got her hooked on architecture, history, and the vivid colors of different communities.
Her childhood kept moving: from Rabat, Morocco, where her father was Peace Corps Director, to Washington, D.C., and later to Henniker, New Hampshire.
Roots in Cape Ann
The North Shore was always home base. After Tilton Prep, Lynn moved to Rust Island to live with her paternal grandparents, Helen and Lucius Rowe. She got to know Gloucester from the inside—packing and cutting fish, working local service jobs—before going on to Simmons College. She graduated in 1978 with a degree in Physical Therapy and a Bachelor of Science.
West and Back
In 1981 she moved west and eventually settled in Las Vegas and Utah. For over thirty years she built a career as a Physical Therapist, including owning her own practice, Lynn Maguire Physical Therapy (LMPT), while raising her daughters, Jessie and Kelly.
In 2020 she came back to the family property on Rust Island to be with her mother, Joan Cummiskey, and Kelly. After Joan’s passing in February 2025, Lynn and Kelly keep the place going—a vibrant “fem farm” with two cats, five Nigerian Dwarf goats, and two alpacas.

Snug Harbor Studio
Lynn runs Snug Harbor Studio with her daughter and co-director, Kelly Maguire—a licensed PTA and Reformer Pilates instructor. Together they’ve built a community center for creatives on Rust Island where art, movement, and community come together.
What Lynn Does
Her own work still draws from the places and things she loves:
- Plein air painting—capturing the light on Cape Ann and the landscapes she’s seen in her travels.
- Life on the water—sailing her 15-foot catboat, Indira, on the Annisquam River.
- Community work—she’s served on the board of the Gloucester Cultural Council and volunteers for the Essex Shipbuilding Museum, the Rockport Art Association, and the North Shore Arts Association. She also volunteers for Cape Ann Plein Air week, one of the country’s premier outdoor painting events.
Paint in Tuscany
When she’s not at the studio, Lynn hosts painting trips in partnership with Tuscany in the Frame, led by Raffaele Nobile. These trips give artists a chance to soak up the same history and architecture that inspired her as a kid. Trips start at €3,100.
